Preventive Automobile Care Tips to
Minimize Auto Costs!
Regular Automotive Maintenance
Air Filter and Cabin Filter: This should also be checked on a regular basis, every time you have your oil changed. But the filter should be replaced at least once a year.
Tire Rotation/Replacement: Have your tires rotated every 6 months. They need to be rotated from front to rear and also from the inside out if possible. Also, tires should be replaced every 2 or 3 years, depending on the wear and usage.
Timing Belt: (If your vehicle is equipped with a timing belt) this should be checked and changed every 60,000 miles or as your manufacturer suggests. This is something that is often neglected but is very important. If the timing belt does fail, it could lead to catastrophic engine damage.
Oil and Oil Filter Changes: Every 3,000 miles. Stop and go driving, short distance runs without letting the vehicle warm up, and the age of the vehicle should be taken into consideration when deciding whether or not to have it changed more often.
Spark Plugs: These should be changed once a year. If you use the higher quality platinum spark plugs, then you should change them around every 80,000 to 100,000 miles. Check with your manufacturer or car owner's manual for recommendations.
If your car is driving a little rough, the first things you may want to check are the spark plugs.
Winterizing Tips
Check Your Cabin Filter. A plugged filter can keep your airflow restricted and it won't be as warm.
Check Your Battery. If your battery is older than 3 years, have it tested. Make sure the posts and connections are not corroded.
Check Your Tire Pressure. A tire that is properly inflated will have better traction.
Check Your Wipers and Wiper Fluid. Replace your wiper blades if they are older than one year. Look for wiper blades that are made for winter use. Use wiper fluid mixed with a de-icer.
Check Your Antifreeze. You should use a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water in your radiator.
Have Your Belts and Hoses Inspected Before Winter Starts. Cold weather can make them weaken at a quicker rate.
